WISDOM FOR DISCERNMENT OF TIMES AND SEASONS

Dec 8, 2025

Genesis 8:21–22… while the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease.

When Noah offered his sacrifice to God after the flood, God set a law in motion: the earth and human activities would be governed by times and seasons. Before the flood, there was no recorded rainfall; instead, the earth was watered from below, like a natural irrigation system. After the flood, the cycle of seasons—rain, sunshine, and cold—began to regulate life on earth.

God calls us to understand times and seasons so that we may engage in the right activity at the right time.

Genesis 41:15–39,… Pharaoh said, “Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?” Then he told Joseph, “Inasmuch as God has shown you all this, there is no one as discerning and wise as you.”

Joseph was not promoted merely because he interpreted a dream, but because he provided Pharaoh with a solution. God preserved the nation of Egypt in Joseph’s time because he had discernment, understanding, and the ability to interpret not only dreams but also times and seasons.

While Israel enjoyed Goshen, the rest of the world was in pain. This happened because Joseph understood the times and seasons. If he had not, they would have suffered like everyone else.

We often suffer and cry like ordinary people, not because God has failed us, but because we fail to recognise the way He has opened for us—ways designed to help us escape the calamities that come upon the earth.

The same Spirit that was in Joseph is the same Spirit we have. There is no reason for us to go through the same hardship as those who do not know God, as though we are blind.

Proverbs 22:3 A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself, but the simple pass on and are punished.

Not every hardship is meant to affect you. Although difficult seasons will come, to continuously live in pain, suffering, and disappointment is not God’s plan. Repeated cycles of hardship are often a sign of a lack of discernment and the need to pray for wisdom.

When it comes to direction, leadership, and walking with God, the spirit of wisdom is essential—especially for correctly interpreting the things happening around us. If we misinterpret situations, we may run away from the very place where God has placed our blessings because of temporary hardships. They misinterpret the season, and leave too early, and when the blessing arrives, they are no longer there to receive it—just like Naomi (Ruth 1:1–5).

Lot made the same mistake in Genesis 13:10-11. He looked toward the valley near Sodom and said, “This is it,” but from there he lost everything. He ended up fathering children through incest because of a wrong interpretation of times and seasons.

Many struggles believers face are not caused by Satan but by a lack of God’s wisdom. Therefore, as we pray and seek God, we must ask for wisdom and understanding of times and seasons, so we can correctly discern situations and take the right actions.
