SHARPEN YOUR EDGE OF DISCERNMENT

Jul 29, 2024

Hebrews 5:13-14 [13] For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. [14] But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Mature people, through practice, have sharpened their discernment and can see good from evil and right from wrong as a result of the continuous use of the Word they have been taught. This is not so with the immature (babes) who keep falling repeatedly into the same thing because they are unskilled in the Word of righteousness.

If there is any age where we need discernment to live, it is this age. Let us cry to the Lord to help us exercise it (we already have it ) and save ourselves from unnecessary pains and losses in this life.

Though the five senses have a place in our lives, we are not to allow ourselves to be ruled by them because, in a world where deceitfulness is increasing, we will use more resources and have little results if we do not practice the truth of God’s Word. (Ecclesiastes 10:10, Genesis 13:10-11, Proverbs 27:12)

1 Corinthians 3:1-3 [1] And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. [2] I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; [3] for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and [a]behaving like mere men?

A canal person is someone whose every action is guided by their five senses. Psalm 82:6-7 shows us that we are gods but suffer the fate of non-believers and die like mere men because for us to manifest our sonship (our God-like ability), we must allow ourselves to be led by the Holy Spirit. (Romans 8:14)

Jesus is the best example of a man who lived not just like a mere man but followed the leading of the Holy Spirit all His life.

In Luke 2:41-47, He reasoned like a mere man but at baptism, He was filled with the Holy Spirit (Luke 3:22), then He was led by the Spirit (Luke 4:1) and when He eventually showed up, He said the Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has anointed me to… (Luke 4:18)

One of the signs that we are under the influence of the Holy Spirit, is not speaking in tongues but being led by Him. For Him to lead us, we need to yield to Him and that is when His greatest help comes.

Help is always there, but if we are not conscious of it, we will never benefit from it. (John 2:1-2).

John 16:7 However, I am telling you nothing but the truth when I say it is profitable (good, expedient, advantageous) for you that I go away. Because if I do not go away, the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you [into close fellowship with you]; but if I go away, I will send Him to you [to be in close fellowship with you]. (AMPC)

By design, we are supposed to depend on God hence the need to be conscious of Him in everything we do.

The Holy Spirit is the Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, and Standby to us. When we are not conscious of this truth and exercise it, we will live like mere men.

Whatever is of man has limitations (Romans 8:32), but the moment we are conscious of our “standby” help of God, and ask for it, we will not die like mere men.

PRAYER
Father, I am sorry for ignoring You and taking for granted the greatest help I have. I repent and ask You to forgive me for my stubbornness. Holy Spirit, You are my helper; I need Your help in all areas of my life. I acknowledge that I have shortcomings, weaknesses, and limitations. I am not strong or wise enough. I come to You in absolute surrender; I need Your guidance and voice in all my decisions and choices. Let Your will be done; whatever You say, I will do exactly that. I am tired of functioning like a mere man.

From today, I take advantage of the greatest Help who lives in me. Lord help me to maintain a robust consciousness and fellowship with the Holy Spirit in every area of my life. Precious Holy Spirit, I welcome You, take over my life, lead me, and I will follow. May Your Word come to me with clarity and nothing hidden, in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
