POSSESSING THE GATES

Jul 26, 2026

Genesis 22:17 “Blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies.”

When God asked Abraham to offer Isaac, He was testing for complete ownership, not just sacrifice. Abraham reached a place where nothing belonged to him anymore, not even the son of promise.

After that total surrender, God released one of His greatest covenant blessings: “Your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies.” This promise covers both Abraham’s natural descendants and all who belong to Christ. (Galatians 3:29)

God promised Abraham two kinds of descendants: the stars, representing his spiritual children, and the sand, representing Israel. To this day, God upholds that covenant. Even in their stubbornness, He has preserved Israel because He is faithful. (Exodus 2:23–3:22)

As the spiritual seed of Abraham, we are also called to possess gates of influence. But God only entrusts His authority to hearts fully surrendered to Him. The measure of His intervention in our lives matches the measure of our surrender. The safest place for our family, business, ministry, and future is in His hands.

Matthew 16:18 “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.”

The gate was the centre of authority. It was where leaders gathered to make laws, hold court sessions, and administer military affairs. Literally, a nation was governed at its gates.

When Jesus spoke of the gates, He revealed God’s intention for His Church—to become His governing body upon the earth. The Church is not merely a gathering of believers within four walls; it is God’s legislative assembly, carrying His authority into every sphere of society.

So, as believers, we are called to influence nations, establish righteousness, and represent the Kingdom of God wherever decisions are made. This is why God is raising believers into every sector of society. Some will serve in government, others in business, education, medicine, law, technology, security, engineering, finance, and every strategic field. These are not merely careers; they are Kingdom assignments.

Luke 23:47–53; John 19:38–42

Jesus had two secret disciples during his earthly ministry: Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. These were not ordinary men. They were men of influence, means, and access within the government.

When Jesus died, there was an urgent need for a tomb in which to bury Him. The disciples who had cast out demons, preached the Gospel, and walked closely with Jesus could not provide what was needed at that moment. It was these men who occupied the gates of influence who fulfilled that assignment.

Joseph approached Pilate and requested Jesus’ body. Nicodemus brought costly spices for His burial. If Joseph had not possessed that level of influence and access, what would have happened to Jesus’s body? This demonstrates why God desires His people to possess the gates.

The Kingdom requires not only men with anointing but also men and women whom God has positioned in places of authority to fulfil His purposes.

Proverbs 14:34 “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.”

The cry of the Spirit in this generation is for righteous men and women to occupy the gates. Nations do not become righteous by accident; they become righteous when those who fear God influence the systems that govern society.

We need judges who cannot be bribed, leaders who fear the Lord, businessmen who honour God, teachers who shape generations with truth, doctors who value life, and professionals who carry the fear of God into every assignment.

The Church cannot remain absent from places where national decisions are made and expect society to reflect the values of the Kingdom. Wherever the righteous occupy the gates, justice flourishes, truth prevails, corruption is confronted, and people rejoice.

Queen Esther understood this responsibility. Though she enjoyed the privileges of royalty, Mordecai reminded her that she had not entered the palace merely for comfort but for God’s divine purpose.

Esther 4:14 …”Who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”.

When the Jews were threatened with destruction, Esther responded with prayer and fasting before appearing before the king. Because she occupied the gate of influence, a law that had been written against God’s people was overturned.

Likewise, God is placing the responsibility of nations upon His Church. The Kingdom needs us. When the hand of God is upon your life, and your heart remains pure before Him, doors will open that no man can shut. God Himself will protect and preserve those who fight for His purposes rather than their own ambitions.

Psalm 127:3–5 “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord… Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth… They shall not be ashamed, but shall speak with their enemies in the gate.”

God is raising sons and daughters who will stand at the gates of influence. He desires righteous people in positions of power and authority so that His will may be established upon the earth. He will use you to fight His battles at the gates.

For this reason, promotion must come—not for personal glory, but because you are His voice in that place, called to stop the pain of the people He has entrusted to your care. Therefore, never abuse your position, because life on earth is brief and we are living for eternity.
