A BROKEN AND CONTRITE SPIRIT

Nov 27, 2023

Amos 3:3 Can two walk together, unless they  agree?

It is common for all religions to give, pray, fast, etc., but what makes you different as a believer is when these practices are governed by God’s Word and the speaking of the Holy Spirit in your heart.

However, if God’s Word and Voice do not restrain/control what you do and say, then all these are religious practices and you are living in utter disobedience of God.

Do you have God’s Word as the final authority in your life, and how much of His Word governs your actions? You do business with God on His terms and for this reason, you must always walk in the fear of God for He is a big God. (Isaiah 66:1)

How Do We Know That A Man/Woman Is Broken and In Contrition of Spirit?

  1. A Man Who Trembles at God’s Word

Isaiah 66:2b “But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And who trembles at My word.

Trembling at God’s Word is not physical shaking when the Word is being spoken but it is doing what God says. This is a life governed by the Word of God which affects them.

God keeps many things from us but demands obedience from us. Mary asked the servants to do as Jesus commanded them and they later had a miracle of water turned into wine (John 2:1-10). This is what obedience does; at the end of your obedience is your miracle.

A man who trembles at God’s Word lives a repentant life. Repentance is not of sin only but of weights that entangle you. And when God instructs you to put off the weights, you don’t argue or find excuses but do as told.

  1. Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit

Mark 14:72 A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And when he thought about it, he wept.

Peter was broken enough to hear instruction in a cock’s crow. How sensitive are you to the Holy Spirit? How many of you, after doing wrong have no conviction in your heart of the words spoken or deeds? This is because your heart is hard. But if your heart is soft, the Holy Spirit will convict you of wrong and ask you to ask for forgiveness. Otherwise, hardheartedness will keep you from receiving your miracle.

1 Samuel 24:4-5

When David cut Saul’s cloth, he was convicted of wrong; he was broken and contrite in Spirit. How many of us do our hearts trouble us when we are going to do something wrong? And if troubled, what’s your reaction?

Be sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit because it is the one that will save you. A knowing in your spirit like that when you got born again, you knew you were, is the only common way God can speak to you. This is because the only part of you that Satan has no access to is your spirit.

Let us clear our hearts from whatever offends the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is Holy and sin will hinder you. But a man of a broken spirit, the Holy Spirit will convict, do not postpone but repent there and then.

  1. Continuous Hunger and Desire for Things of God

When walking in brokenness and contrition of spirit, there is a continuous hunger for the things of God. When your hunger for God has gone down, it is an indicator that sickness has entered you. As the song by Sinach goes: ‘The more I know you, the more I want to know You…,’ every genuine encounter with God leaves you with a desire for more.

Deuteronomy 3:24 ‘O Lord GOD, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your mighty hand, for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do anything like Your works and Your mighty deeds?

Physical hunger can be satisfied but not spiritual hunger. Moses, at the end of his journey, said God had just begun to show his servant His greatness. You cannot have enough of God; you will never arrive in Him.

  1. You Do Not Despise People

Job 36:5a “Behold, God is mighty, but despises no one;

As mighty as God is, He despises no one. If you are truly broken, you will never despise any creature of God. You will not classify people- God was in His class, came down to our class, and took us to His class. God has blessed us to be a blessing. This is why God calls us sons, He multiplies Himself in us.

STAY BLESSED AND HIGHLY FAVORED, WE LOVE YOU.
